Stags Fall To Successive Loss

Carlisle United 1-0 Mansfield Town (EFL League Two) 18.04.22

They say seasons can be defined over the Easter weekend and it hasn’t been a very good one for Mansfield Town who lose both of their holiday matches and in doing so slip out of the League Two playoff zone.

After a home loss against Sutton United on Good Friday it was Bank Holiday Monday Blues as they lost by the single goal to Carlisle.

Nigel Clough’s men started positively in the northwest but couldn’t take advantage of some early dominance, Stirk shooting low saved by Howard on nine before Bowery tested the goalkeeper a couple of minutes later.

McLaughlin cleared off the line a golden opportunity for the hosts to take the lead on fifteen before the left back found himself in more advanced positions moments later, chipping the goalkeeper but lifting his attempt over the bar.

As Mansfield pressed late on in the first half, Jamie Murphy hits the bar with the ball crashing down on the line, the Stags unlucky not to go in at the break with a lead.

The second half looked to start as in vein of the first and McLaughlin hit the side netting with another missed Mansfield attempt.

Carlisle would then take the lead on 56 as Omari Patrick took on his marker before firing home to put the Cumbrians one up.

That lead could have been doubled on the hour, Nathan Bishop saving from Feeney who’s header came off the goalkeeper and on to the bar before Patrick headed over, Carlisle then hit the post through Simeu on 73 as the hosts looked for more Stag blood.

Late on the home side even had the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for offside, Mansfield running out of steam at Brunton Park, the longer the game went, the less impact the side would have.

The defeat means Mansfield fall to eighth in the table, still level on points with Tranmere in seventh, inside the playoff places, but what could have been six points and third place with four games to play, is instead zero, and eighth, and chasing following a forgettable Easter weekend.
