Bees Win Cup

Beeston Hockey Club are Tier 1 National Cup winners for the second time in three years after beating Buckingham in the final on Saturday at Lee Valley by three goals to one.

The Bees had never won the cup, prior to beating Clifton Robinsons 5-3 in the 2020 final at Nottingham Hockey Centre but are now making a habit of winning silverware after beating first time finalists Buckingham in a thrilling match in North London.

Hannah Grieve gave the Notts based side the lead from the penalty spot in the first quarter of the match before Lucy Millington doubled Beeston’s advantage after just 21 minutes following a penalty corner.

Irish International Nadia Benallal received a green card and a two minute suspension before half time as the Bees held firm with two goal advantage over Buckingham into the break, things however got even better for the black and golds as Lauren Burrell converted another penalty corner in Q3 to put the tie all but out of reach.

Buckingham did pull a goal back with just three minutes to go but Beeston more than held on, in a match they impressively dominated thanks to their early lead and super-fast start.

Former player and Chairman Gareth Griffiths stating on Twitter “Amazing way to cap off a brilliant season” whilst Head Coach James Sordillo said, simply “job done”.

A fantastic end to a campaign where the Bees held their own in the top half of the Premier Division and yet again proved to be one of the elite sides in the country, with more silverware added to their growing repertoire.
