All football matches across the country this weekend have been postponed as the sport unites to pay their respects to the Royal Family and the wider commonwealth after the loss of Queen Elizabeth II.
A Premier League statement re the Queens sad passing yesterday has announced ‘To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.’
This includes Nottingham Forest’s trip to Leeds United which will now be played at a later date in the season.
The EFL have also announced that fixtures on September 9th & 10th will be postponed as a mark of respect.
This includes Saturday’s match between Mansfield Town and Bradford City which is now off.
The National League have also confirmed that Saturday’s games are to be postponed, including Notts County’s match verses Bromley tomorrow at Meadow Lane, the league will resume however in midweek, with the Magpies set to play Aldershot Town at home on Tuesday night.
All other leagues under the National League system and grassroots umbrella have cancelled their fixtures this weekend, with games postponed in the Southern League Central (affecting Basford United) as well as postponements in the Northern Premier League (involving Carlton Town & Worksop Town).
In a statement announced by statement by Debbie Hewitt, chair of The Football Association, ‘all National League System, FA Trophy, and grassroots fixtures scheduled for this weekend will not take place as a mark of respect. The Queen was the FA’s patron, and Prince William is its President.’
This news follows a number of sporting cancellations after hearing the sad news from Buckingham Palace on Thursday afternoon, horse racing at Southwell yesterday was postponed and following the successful Nottinghamshire stage which ended in Mansfield, the last three legs of the Tour of Britain cycle race were cancelled following a statement from organisers which read ‘This decision has been taken in consultation with stakeholders and partners in light of operational circumstances, including the understandable reassignment of police resource at this time.’
Other events, including England’s test match with South Africa at the Oval and the PGA Championships at Wentworth, have also been postponed.
