Sub Maris Sparks Stags Win

Rochdale 0-1 Mansfield Town (EFL League Two) 12.11.22

Mansfield Town ended a run of four games without a win in the league with a much needed performance and three points at Spotland, the Stags edging their hosts by a single goal scored in the second half by substitute George Maris.

After a good start by the home side, it was Mansfield pressing for early opportunities with a Boateng effort deflected behind before the same player shot straight at the goalkeeper from the resulting corner.

Akins and Hewitt then had chances blocked before a goal mouth scramble had Rochdale somehow avoiding conceding an opener, Hartigan’s free kick causing chaos as Lapslie and Hewitt couldn’t find the net as the ball ping ponged inside the area.

Quinn then curled an attempt over before Pym was tested at the other end, Hartigan then shot low from range but a whisker away as inches wide of the posts.

Nil nil at the break, Stephen Quinn had the first opportunity of the second half, glancing a header from Hartigan’s corner over the bar as Mansfield continued to press, before finally getting their breakthrough, substitute George Maris prodding home a Hirem Boateng delivery to put Mansfield ahead on 66.

Mansfield defended their lead well and Rochdale weren’t able to breach Christy Pym’s goal, the away side taking all three much needed points after bouncing up and back into the League Two playoff places after recent disappointment seen the side slip down the division.
