United’s Day In Retford Derby

There were some big results across the Nottinghamshire non-league scene on Saturday afternoon, be it Carlton’s win in the FA Trophy, Worksop or Sherwood Colliery or Newark & Sherwood et al, winning in the league, but there was one that stood out more – Retford United 6 Retford 1, as the Retford derby attracted more than 1,200 spectators.

Holding a three-goal advantage at the interval, the Northern Counties East Division One high-fliers added another couple in the second period to complete a comprehensive victory.

The Badgers took an early, two-goal lead, striker Mark West on his way to a first-half hat-trick, his first came in the opening minutes when volleying home a corner, before Nick Guest made it two inside ten minutes, he converting another corner.

The visiting Choughs scored what would prove their consolation goal after a dozen minutes, Aaron Sennett-Nielson firing home from the edge of the box before, with the game just a quarter hour old, the hosts added their third (they’d also had one disallowed for offside), West sliding in to finish.

Both sides continued to create chances but it would be the hosts who’d further extend their lead as the game headed towards the break, West on hand to complete a stunning, first half-hat-trick for a 4-1, interval lead.

Twenty minutes into the second period and Brandon Kane added the hosts’ fifth, before substitute Jacob Priestnall put the final nail in the visitors with the sixth for the rampant hosts, he having only been on the pitch a matter of minutes.

For the visitors, a tough result in which to take at the best of times, let alone against cross-town rivals, as for the hosts, they’ll soak this one in for some time 9as will Mark West), or at least until the return fixture on Boxing Day.
