Swindon Town 1-2 Notts County (EFL League Two) 31.08.24
Notts County’s unbeaten start to the new EFL League Two season remained intact on Saturday as they triumphed over Swindon Town at the County Ground.
Although it would be the home side to start the match better, as Will Wright made a good challenge on Curtis Edwards in the middle of the park, following a risky pass made by Jack Hinchy. The ball would resultingly find its way to Gavin Kilkenny on the edge of the area, who produced an inch-perfect finish to pick out the bottom corner of the Magpies’ net.
However, Notts would respond barely ten minutes later, half an hour into the exchange when Conor Grant picked up the ball from Dan Crowley and laid it off to veteran David McGoldrick. The 36-year-old worked the space for himself on the left-hand side of the Swindon penalty area, before producing a sublime finish which found its way into the back of the net, via the upright.
With the scores level, Notts could count themselves lucky going into half-time, as they were lacking desire and invention in the final third, something addressed by Stuart Maynard in his post-match interview.
The home side upped the ante in the second period as they tried to break the deadlock, but the Notts defence would stand strong. This would pay dividends in the end for County though, as McGoldrick would get his second of the game, ten minutes from time, as he curled in a beautiful effort to cap off a wonderful defensive performance from his side.
Many say it is the true sign of champions when a side win when they have not been playing at their best. Although it is still early in the season, many Notts fans will be encouraged by this result, as it shows the improvement from last year, where no doubt, County could have feasibly lost the contest.
Next up for the Magpies is Accrington Stanley, who pay a visit to Meadow Lane after they have endured a turbulent start this year, only managing two draws and no wins. Therefore, Stuart Maynard will be searching for another win in the hopes of retaining County’s unbeaten streak.
