United Through In Trophy
Basford United are through to the next stage of the FA Trophy after winning their third qualifyng round tie against Hanley Town on penalties at Greenwich Avenue on Saturday.
In an entertaining tie against step four opponents from Stoke-on-Trent it was United’s player coach/assistant manager and goalkeeper Saul Deeney who was the hero of the shootout in helping his side progress, saving two spot kicks as his team-mates netted four to win with a kick to spare.
United fell behind to an early Tom Pope goal but levelled up with a low driven volley by Rev James on fourteen minutes. Tyrell Waite then gave Basford the lead just five minutes later but Pope grabbed his second of the game on 36 to set up a second half with scores all square.
Basford brought on McKeal Abdullah for his debut after joining on loan from Mansfield Town but neither team could find the net with the game going all the way to spot kicks, no extra time in the FA Trophy so straight to penalties after ninety minutes of normal time.
Prince Mancinelli was first to net for Basford before Deeney saved Hanley’s opening shot, then Abdullah made no mistake before former Derby and Mansfield Town goalkeeper Deeney made it two out of two. Rev James then netted by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give the Ambers a three goal lead, although Hanley did net their third, Josh Barnes smashed home the fourth to give United a 4-1 penalties win.
Worksop Town also progressed to the next round after a 2-1 win over St Ives Town at Sandy Lane. The Tigers coming from a goal behind and Craig Parry’s side were made to do it the hard way as Liam Hughes was sent off early in the second half with a second yellow for dissent. Worksop though levelling from the spot after Aaron Smith tripped Jordan Burrow to receive his marching orders and a second booking on the hour, Vaughan Redford sending the visitors keeper the wrong way before Jacob Gratton struck home a winner on 70 and despite St Ives hitting a post late on, Worksop hung on to go through.
Back in Northern Premier League action, both Carlton Town and Sherwood Colliery drew their respective games in the East Division.
The Millers were held 2-2 by Liversedge after a last minute leveller cancelled out another Lamin Manneh goal on 47 and Jack Newell strike on 71 in between Joe Walton scoring on 56 minutes. As Carlton looked good value to take all three points, full back Alfie Raw struck on 90 to earn the away side a share of the spoils and a point to take back up to West Yorkshire.
Also sharing the spoils but more happy with the end verdict perhaps were Sherwood Colliery who themselves netted a late leveller in a 1-1 draw with Bishop Auckland. The visitors struggling in the bottom three this season took the lead on 50 through Louis Johnson but Oliver Monington came off the bench to square up on 89 to provide a point which means Sherwood are tenth in the division on twelve from nine played, Carlton meanwhile are eleventh with eleven points from seven games so far.
