Wins For Worksop & Basford

Basford United beat Stockton Town on Tuesday night as Worksop Town won against Whitby to end a run of four league games without a win.

I was at Greenwich Avenue to watch Basford impress against playoff contending Stockton but it didn’t start brilliantly for the Ambers who went a goal behind after just 41 seconds when Prince Mancinelli was caught in possession by Stephen Thompson who ran through on goal to score.

Despite the early set back, Basford dominated a first half and levelled when Jordan Hallam smartly turned his marker to shoot low and hard from just inside the box, Kacy Butterfield then had a shot deflected onto the post and after the break, United continued to press for a second as Hallam struck a free kick against the bar and Barnes went close but for some desperate defending.

Eventually, Basford’s persistence did pay off, on 72 minutes, substitute McKeal Abdullah, on loan from Mansfield Town, crossed low and hard from the left side for Ashley Chambers to do what he does best, the former Coalville striker getting his eleventh of the season from close range.

It could have been even better, as Kane Richards, lively down the right all night, was tripped inside the box, Jordan Hallam’s penalty crashing away off the post, but Basford clung on with a late rear guard action to a huge three points which has Martin Carruther’s side up to eleventh in the Northern Premier League table.

Whitby Town returned to Nottinghamshire after a 4-3 win at Basford last weekend but they couldn’t trip Worksop who had been on a sorrowful run of late having lost five of their last six NPL games.

The Tigers ending a run of four straight league defeats with a 3-0 win, Dan Bramall with two goals, netting on the stroke of half time before scoring again on 72, Jordan Burrow completing a good nights work on 78, Craig Parry’s team are back in second place, level on points (31 from 17 played) with third placed Hebburn Town, below leaders Macclesfield who have 44 points and a game in hand.

On Wednesday night, Newark & Sherwood United beat Hucknall Town 2-1 in the United Counties League Premier Division North at Harrowby.

After a tightly contested first hour and more, Newark went behind to a strange Niall Towle goal on 61 when a right wing cross seemed to bounce over goalkeeper Oliver Cash and into the net. But Sam King blasted home a leveller on 78 before a late winner, headed home by Jamie Williamson on 86, gave the hosts all three points and ended the temporary tenure of Chris Galley in charge of Hucknall, Galley who’s father John played for Nottingham Forest in the 1970’s had taken over the clubs reigns as they looked for a new Manager following the departure of Reece Limbert, despite being asked to stay on by new duo Triss Whitman and Aaron Large, Galley sent a tweet out to call time on his stay at the RM Stadium whilst wishing the new management team the best of luck.

Hucknall are 16th in the 20 team table and just three points above the relegation zone. Newark & Sherwood now ninth in the table on 26 points from 14 played. Just five points below the playoff places with games in hand on those above.

Also in action on Wednesday night saw UCL Division One promotion contenders Retford United beat Clifton All Whites 6-2. Retford up to third in the table after victory, eight points behind leaders Clipstone with a game in hand, Clifton are 14th in the 19 team table just four points above the drop zone.
