United Through In Trophy

Basford United came through a tough tie to beat National League South St Albans City to reach the third round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

United took the lead in the 52nd minute through McKeal Abdullah and doubled their advantage with a sensational second from Jordan Hallam, a thirty-yard strike into the top corner.

The step 2 hosts did peg United back with a 71st minute reply but the Ambers clung on to victory on a marvellous afternoon in Hertfordshire. Manager Martin Carruthers saying after “an unreal performance, to come to a team a league above, we knew they would dominate possession and are a real good footballing side, and with a patched up side, defensively we were outstanding.”

“I said at half time, if you keep discipline and keep shape, we can go on and win it, we were nervous at the end, they through everything at us and we rode our luck, but you need that bit of luck sometimes in the cup”

United gave a debut to young Harvey Woodward in goal, he was superb in making some crucial saves, particularly near the end of the game, but star man Jordan Hallam was again the difference, his goal of the season contender fit enough to win any game of football.

Basford next face Eastwood Community on Tuesday night in the Notts Senior County Cup. The match will be an 8pm Kick off at Coronation Park.

Not quite the result that Worksop Town wanted as they crashed out in the FA Trophy at Radcliffe after conceding a two-goal lead, the Tigers fell to late, agonising 3-2 defeat.

Jordan Burrow had given the away side a first half lead before Aaron Martin made it two a minute into the second half, Radcliffe pulled a goal back on 68 through Josh Hancock and levelled on 86 via Danny Greenfield, before a 90th minute winner from Mworina Doro saw Craig Parry’s men crash out of the KO competition.

Finally, in the Northern Premier League East Division at the weekend, Carlton Town drew 0-0 at Ossett United whilst Sherwood Colliery lost 1-0 at Garforth Town.
