Mansfield Ladies Edge Out Stamford

Mansfield Town continued their strong start to the season on Sunday, registering their eighth clean sheet of the season (third in succession), in a 1-0 win away to mid-table Stamford, and sit second in the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division.

With Chesterfield, slipping to third, on cup duty (won 5-1 at home to Long Eaton United, in the Derbyshire County Cup), and with games in hand, Sheffield moved top with their 5-2 win at home to Nottingham Trent University, whilst Andi Bell’s side moved back into second with their success.

The only goal of the game, between Stamford and Mansfield Town, came during the first half of their meeting at the Borderville Sports Centre, via defender Maia Taylor, the Stags closing in on the forty-goal mark this campaign, whilst conceding less than ten along the way.

Now heading into the winter break, Bell’s charges return to action on 5 January, with their rearranged EMWRFL League Plate tie, away to Division One South high-fliers, Wellingborough Town, before travelling to Chesterfield a week later, followed by four consecutive home games.

Mansfield Town – Amy Price, Maia Taylor, Chloe Hutsby, Monica Bowley, Georgina Clements, Grace Shipman, Abbie Greaves, Ava Williamson, Chloe Foster, Libby Bartlett, Olivia Standeven (subs – Olivia Wheatcroft, Gabriella Foulkes, Shannon Purdy, Mathilda Evans, Millie Edwards)

Basford United are sitting sixth, but suffered a 9-0 loss when home to a Rotherham side who moved into fourth place, Lexie Butterworth and Alesha Gale both bagging hat-tricks, Beth Howarth a brace, and one for Sophie Gordon; NTU meanwhile are second bottom, sandwiched between SJR Worksop and Ilkeston Town.

In Division One Central, second bottom West Bridgford Colts suffered a similar fate to Basford, they losing 9-0 when away to current leaders Loughborough Foxes Vixens – that’s now twenty goals scored in three games for Loughborough, at home to Notts clubs (Basford United 4-0, Arnold Eagles 7-0, West Bridgford Colts 9-0).

Both Notts-based clubs in Division One North, Sherwood and Notts County Development, lost on the road, to Chesterfield (1-0) and Grimsby Town Academy (5-1) respectively – Sherwood sit fourth, Arnold Eagles are eighth and Notts Devs ninth, heading into the winter break.

In the Notts Girls & Ladies League Seniors One, Radcliffe Olympic have a three-point advantage on joint-second pairing, Calverton Miners Welfare, and Mansfield Town Development (with Newark Town, and University of Nottingham a point further back), after they eased to a comfortable, 5-0 win, at third bottom Hucknall Town, Taylor Johnson netting a brace for the victors.

Calverton moved into second place after they won 3-1 away to second bottom Retford, with only the four points splitting the top five sides; meanwhile, in Seniors Two, Bingham Town won 5-1 at Sherwood Development to move into third place, Holly Lockton and Ether Tun both bagging braces.

There were also several games played in the NGLL Seniors Cup, Newark Town progressing off a 9-3 win at home to Eastwood & Kimberley, Connie Forman bagging five goals; Underwood Villa edged an extra-time, 2-1 win at Blidworth Welfare, and Arnold Eagles Development won by the same when at Cotgrave.

Basford United won on penalties after they drew 1-1 with Sherwood Colliery, whilst seven goals were witnessed in the game between Lowdham Colts and Southwell City, the latter moving into the next round with a 5-2 win, Chloe Hobson with a brace for the victors.
