Rugby Round Up – Pavs Fall At Dronfield
Regional rugby saw a handful of games played this past weekend, although it made for grim reading for a handful of local sides at the top end of the rugby pyramid.
Paviors slipped to third bottom in Regional 2 Midlands North following a heavy defeat at home to leaders Dronfield, whilst Southwell also fell to their leaders, away to Belgrave, in Counties 1 Midlands East (North).
Further down however, there was continued success for Keyworth and West Bridgford IIs, they both holding court atop of their respective divisions, the latter with an impressive win on Friday gone, against one of their fellow promotion hopefuls, Bingham.
Up in Regional 2, it was to be action for Notts-based clubs at the wrong end of the table, Dronfield winning 59-14 at Paviors a bad result for the hosts, their eleventh defeat of the season.
Beneath them, there’s a little breathing space, of some seventeen points, at present, with Mellish moving off the foot of the table, and into second bottom, with a 20-13 success at home to their relegation rivals, Tamworth it was the first win of the season for the hosts.
Inactive West Bridgford, they dropped to fourth place following a narrow victory for Melbourne, 29-22 at Matlock, Bridgy four points off third, and eight off Lichfield, in second.
Belgrave, joint-leaders of Counties 1 Midlands East (North) with Hinckley IIs, picked up a battling, 38-14 success, when home to Southwell, who sit in third place, eleven behind – Southwell face Hinckley IIs next, away, with Belgrave at fifth place Kesteven.
Four Notts clubs were in action in Counties 2 Midlands East (North), leaders Keyworth with an eight-point advantage on second place Ashbourne (ten on third place Ashby) after both collected victories; the former, they eased past visiting Melton Mowbray, 28-14, whilst the latter, they also won at home, against visiting Nottingham Casuals, who sit sixth in the table.
Keyworth, they face lowly Derby IIs next, but know the two sides directly beneath have the advantage, with games in hand.
Bottom club Ashfield picked up a victory, their fourth of the season, 33-17 at Birstall, whilst there was a high-scoring game between lowly Newark IIs and fifth place Mosborough, Newark winning narrowly, 46-39, at home.
Meanwhile, in the Counties 3 Midlands East (Central) division, West Bridgford’s second string continue to lead the way, holding an eleven-point advantage on second place Southwell IIs, who won 50-5 at Leesbrook on Saturday, Bridgy claiming a battling, 31-19 success, at home to Bingham under those Friday Night Lights.
Defeat for Bingham saw them slip to fourth place, two points behind Long Eaton IIs in third, whilst the trio of Nottinghamians (8th), Mellish IIs (10th), and Nottingham Moderns IIs (11th), they make up the majority of the bottom four, Ilkeston IIs sitting in ninth place.
