Selston Clinch Late Glory
There were plenty of goals, some late drama, and a maiden managerial victory, in games involving Notts clubs in the United Counties League on Saturday afternoon.
The late drama, that came at the end of both halves, as Selston saw off the challenge of ten-man victors, Gedling Miners Welfare, who led 2-1 at the break thanks to goals from Jack Jepson and Courtney Hastings.
Selston though, they got one of those back in first half injury-time when Jack Cockram netted, before substitute Leighton Bowering equalised, on the rebound, within six minutes of the restart.
Gedling, who are chasing a play-off spot, then found themselves down to ten men with a little under fifteen remaining, their first scorer, Jepson, dismissed for a second bookable offence.
The winner, for the hosts, completing a remarkable turnaround, came in the 93rd minute, much to delight of those on, and off the field, Cockram finding himself clean through on goal before rounding the visiting shot-stopper, and slotting the ball home.
Selston – Branon Meehan, Lee Stevenson, Jake Payling, Josh Smith, Declan Whitton, Sean Gregory, Jack Cockram, George Layton, Ben Moore, Lewis Fantom, Arthur Pashley
Gedling MW – Harvey Woodward, Muta Eisa, Daniel Momah, Steven Brett, Buba Ceesay, Jack Jepson, Grant Tobin, Josh Thornton, Jack Vipond, Kieran Harrison, Coutney Hastings
Meanwhile, above Gedling, at the top end of Division One, filling three of the four play-off spots, are the two Retford sides, and Clipstone, all of whom won on the road, whilst in the division above, the Premier North, Eastwood CFC kept their noses in-front at the top following a derby win at Kimberley Miners Welfare, as top faced bottom.
Aaron O’Connor put Eastwood in front from the penalty spot just after the half hour mark, affording the visitors an interval lead; that was doubled late in the second through Terry Hawkridge, before Aaron Coyle reduced the deficit with seven minutes remaining.
However, the result was put beyond doubt at the death when Craig Westcarr added the third in the last minute, and gave the leaders a three-point advantage on second place Bourne Town, along with a slightly superior goal-difference.
AFC Mansfield and Newark Town are fighting for the last play-off spot, Ryan Ingram’s goal giving the former a 1-0 win away to Skegness Town, whilst the latter were stung when conceding a 96th minute equalising off visitors Deeping Rangers, who snatched a 2-2 draw, Matteo Perkins and Ryan Rushen having netted for the hosts.
That result for Newark, that sees them having dropped points in their last four game, all draws, from which the last three successive have finished 2-2 (four in their last six unbeaten, one win and five draws).
First half goals from Reece Sugars, Joseph Ashurst, and Chae Whitman-Brown, gave Hucknall Town a 3-0 win at home to Gresley Rovers, whilst Shirebrook Town lost 2-1 at Harrowby United.
Back in Division One, and those three wins at the top end of the table; Retford were made to battle for the points before edging hosts Pinxton 3-2, to keep level on goal-difference with Clay Cross Town, Iren Wilson notching twice alongside a goal from Scott Boden.
Ryan Hindley managed Retford United for the hundredth time as his third-place side celebrated with a comfortable, 5-0 win, away to Clifton All Whites, goals coming from Mark West (2), Max Pemberton, Sam Finlaw, and Jake Champion.
As for fourth place Clipstone, they eased past hosts Holwell Sports 2-0, thanks to late goals from Gareth Curtis and Tomas Fleet.
Elsewhere in the division Radford won 3-2 at home to West Bridgford, Stapleford Town shocked leaders Clay Cross with a 2-1 win, Rainworth Miners Welfare and Sandiacre Town battled out a 2-2 draw, whilst there were defeats for Southwell City (2-1 at home off Staveley Miners Welfare), and Dunkirk (losing 6-1 at home to Blackstones).
