Stags Unbeaten In Eight After Draw

Nigel Clough’s Mansfield Town side are continuing to chip away at sides above them in the League One table and, although they’ve drawn their last three, are currently in the midst of an eight-match unbeaten run.

Beginning on Boxing, the Stags have won five and drawn three of their last eight games, progressing to the FA Cup fourth round where they’ll face Premier League Burnley, on Valentines Day, and continued to strengthen a mid-table position, with games in hand on sides around them.

Having drawn away to both Stevenage (0-0), and Plymouth Argyle (1-1), in their last two outing, Clough’s side perhaps needed a more positive result on Saturday afternoon against visiting Wycombe Wanderers.

Having strengthened his squad in the January transfer window, Clough has also brought in sturdy back-up to Liam Roberts in the Stags goal, Harry Lewis arriving from Carlisle United and watched from the bench as the hosts registered a fourth clean sheet of this unbeaten run, although the first half against Wycombe left a lot to be desired, neither ‘keeper finding themselves tested.

It was pretty much a similar prospect in the second half as well, with Liam Roberts being called into action to stop Caylan Boyd-Munce’s 20yd half-volley on fifty-two minutes the contests only real effort, both sides seemingly ‘happy’ with a point apiece.

MANSFIELD TOWN (vs. Wycombe Wanderers) Liam Roberts, Deji Oshilaja, Ryan Sweeney (captain), Baily Cargill (Stephen McLaughlin, 46), Elliott Hewitt (Luke Bolton, 46), Aaron Lewis, Regan Hendry (Victor Adeboyejo, 79), Frazer Blake-Tracy (Nathan Moriah-Welsh, 72), Jon Russell, Will Evans, Oliver Irow (Rhys Oates, 46)

As mentioned, it was a third draw for the Stags in the past week, they sitting eleventh in the table, on thirty-eight points, and ten off sixth place Huddersfield Town, who occupy sixth, and the last playoff position.

The Stags’ eight-match unbeaten run, dating back to Boxing Day’s win over Barnsley (3-2), has seen them come through unscathed against Bolton Wanderers (1-0), Bradford City (3-0), Port Vale (3-0), Stevenage (1-1), Plymouth Argyle (1-1), and Wycombe Wanderers (0-0), as well as seeing off Championship side, Sheffield United (4-3), in the cup.

During the eight-match run, Rhys Oates has bagged himself four of the sixteen goals scored, with Louis Reed and Lucas Akins getting three apiece; Oates scored twice in the 3-0 win over Bradford, Reed enjoyed himself with a first half double against the Blades in that cup win, and new signing, Oliver Irow, also got off the ground running with two of his own in the win over Vale.

It’s the second of three consecutive home games for the Stags next (Saturday 7 February), they welcoming an Exeter City side two places and one point beneath them in the League

One table, before hosting Peterborough United, who currently sit between the Stags and the Grecians, a week on Tuesday (10 February).

Then it’s a trip to Turf Moor, and a Valentines Day FA Cup clash at Premier League Burnley, as the Stags look to make the fifth round for the first time since the 1974-75 season, when they lost 1-0 at home to Carlisle United.
