Nottingham 14-23 Cornish Pirates (RFU Championship) 01.11.19
Nottingham were beaten 14-23 by Cornish Pirates at the Bay last night but can be proud of their performance against a team that will be in the promotion push come the end of the season.
The Pirates were on the board after just three minutes when Javier Rojas Alvarez kicked over a penalty before Shane O’Leary kicked home brilliantly on eight to level things up.
It was Nottingham who went over first through Scanlon on 14 but after O’Leary missed the conversion Alvarez closed the gap on 18 to a two point game.
The Pirates got their first try on 23 when Duncan picked up the ball from a scrum to push over the line before conversion but O’Leary kicked over on 34 to close the gap and at half time the two sides went in 11-13.
The second half started perfectly for the away side after some strong mauling it looked to be Duncan again who crept the ball over and with a good conversion it gave the Pirates a nine point lead with over half an hour to play.
Nottingham pushed and O’Leary kicked over on 66 to make it 14-20 but the last score went to the Pirates who kicked a penalty themselves over from Alvarez before the away side were reduced to 14 for the latter stages when Ben Beukeboom was sin binned on 77.
Some great pressure by Nottingham in the closing stages who just fell short on the night. The next game for the Green and Whites is a trip to Jersey next weekend.
