Basford Close Gap On Shields

Basford United closed the gap on Northern Premier League leaders South Shields to just two points on Saturday after beating Atherton Collieries 3-1 in Lancashire with Steve Chettle’s side now unbeaten in seven.

The second placed NPL team hit the lead after 13 minutes when the talented Nathan Watson’s shot deflected home but after tense exchanges it wasn’t until 64 minutes when the away side took full control when former Forest & Ilkeston midfielder James Reid fired home.

Kane Richards smashed home the goal of the game on 76 to make it three before a late consolation from the home side in injury time.

In the BetVictor Northern Premier South East Division leaders Carlton Town took a point at Glossop North End. Mamoke Akaunu gave the Millers an early lead but the home side levelled on the hour leaving Carlton Vice-Chairman Barry North frustrated but satisfied with taking something from the game stating the team were “not at our best, but a well earned away point”.

Worksop Town’s match verses Chasetown in the same division was postponed following a downpour on Saturday morning.

In FA Vase action Newark Flowserve beat Rugby Town 3-0 with goals from Gregg Smith and two from Danny Meadows. AFC Mansfield saw off Long Buckby 3-1 to make the third round whilst West Bridgford’s hopes of achieving more history after a fabulous run were cut short for another season after falling 2-0 to Heanor at Regatta Way.

Other ties involving Notts clubs were postponed and rescheduled for this week with Dunkirk travelling to Worcester City now on Wednesday and Eastwood Community set to face Lutterworth along with Sherwood Colliery travelling to Clay Cross tomorrow.

In the North East Counties League first division on Saturday Retford were beaten 3-1 at home to Nostell Miners Welfare whilst in the East Midlands Counties League Gedling Miners Welfare beat Borrowash 4-0 whilst Clipstone did the same at Shirebrook and Rainworth MW were beaten 3-1 at home to Teversal.

Finally Clifton lost at home to Ingles 2-1 whilst Kimberley MW took a point at Barrow Town in a match ending 1-1.
