Notts Pay The Late Penalty

Notts County 2-2 Boreham Wood (National League) 26.11.19

A dramatic last minute penalty after Connor Rawlinson was sent off for a professional foul denied Notts County of home victory as Boreham Wood snatched a point from the jaws of defeat at Notts County.

Justin Shaibu gave the away side a fifteenth minute lead before Kyle Wootton equalised on the half hour and it was Wootton again who netted on 41 to give Notts a half time lead.

Notts pressed in the second half for a third but despite a number of opportunities which included Enzo Boldewijn hitting a post they couldn’t put the game to bed and paid the price in the final minute when Kabongo Tshimanga raced through to be fallen by Rawlinson with Referee Lewis Smith awarding the penalty which Sorba Thomas dispatched.

Manager Neal Ardley after the game was fuming stating “The ref has killed us.”

“I don’t normally speak ill of referees, but he has cost  us the game.”

Ardley said “The foul is a yard outside the box,  he has sent a player off, there is a recovering defender and if the striker takes another touch Damian McCrory probably gets his body across him.”

“It’s a horrendous decision.”

Notts County’s attentions now turn to the FA Cup on Saturday as they visit Northampton Town which will be a welcome distraction from the league where they have now not won in four matches.
