Newark Dream Continues

FA Cup newcomers Newark FC are re-writing history as they have reached the second qualifying round in their debut year in the competition following a thumping 5-0 win at AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

In three FA Cup games so far the Tangerines have scored 13 goals and conceded none.

Former Celtic and Middlesbrough striker Ben Hutchinson opened the scoring from the spot after Kevin Bastos was brought down and it was 2-0 when Danny Meadows netted before the same player doubled his tally to make it three all inside 27 minutes.

In the second half Newark immediately pushed as Bastos forced a save from the Rushden goalkeeper before Hutchinson did make it four and Bastos completed the rout to send Newark through into unprecedented stages of the famous old competition

In beating a side two steps higher Newark are slowly making people aware of their name and abilities as a football team that is destined to having a great season ahead.

A famous supporter in Nottinghamshire Cricket Commentator David Bracegirdle saying after “Absolutely incredible performance tonight. Newark FC did the town proud”.

Joining Newark FC in the second qualifying round is Worksop Town who beat Westfields 3-1 in Herefordshire. An entertaining first half saw Westfields take the lead on seven minutes before the Tigers levelled on 32 through Vaughan Redford.

Left back Connor Smythee then made it 2-1 to the away side and a goal on the edge of half time by Luke Hinsley made it 3-1 with Craig Parry’s side seeing the job through in the second half.

Another Nottinghamshire side through to the next stage is AFC Mansfield who beat Gainsborough Trinity in a huge upset 3-0 at the Forest Town Arena.

The Bulls took the lead through Ross Duggan on 17 minutes and two minutes into the second half the home side made it 2-0 when Phil Buxton volleyed home. In the dying minutes Algar made it three to complete a memorable win over strong opponents.

Elsewhere West Bridgford FC’s run is over after losing 1-0 at home to Halesowen Town whilst Carlton Town were beaten at Banbury to end their cup dream for another year.
