Konta Wins Nottingham Open
After two previous finals defeats in 2017 and 2018, Great Britain number one Johanna Konta ensured it was third time lucky as she beat China’s Zhang Shuai to become the WTA singles champion at the Viking Nottingham Open at last.
Konta beat Zhang 6-2, 6-1 in a match that lasted an hour and said after “It’s hard to win tournaments, so that’s why I felt very grateful. To do it in front of a home crowd on the grass, it’s an experience I haven’t had yet and I’m really grateful to be having right now.”
After beating Alison Van Uytvanck in the last eight on Friday, Konta beat Nina Stojanovic after three sets in Saturday’s semi-final before taking on Zhang Shuai in Sunday’s final which ended in a routine win.
On the same day, American Frances Tiafoe beat fellow-countryman Denis Kudla in the ATP men’s challenger event final 6-1, 6-3 whilst Lyudmyla Kichenok and Makoto Ninomiya beat Caroline Dolehide and Storm Sanders 6-4, 6-7, 10-8 in a thrilling women’s doubles final.
