Carlton Make Double Swoop

As the clock ticks down to the start of the Pitching In Northern Premier League season, ahead of their opening match on Saturday in the newly formed Midland Division at Shepshed Dynamo, Carlton Town have swooped for two players as the Millers Management duo of Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey strengthen their side with the arrivals of Khyle Sargeant and Kieran Preston.

Having played at Carlton in seasons gone by under then Manager Wayne Scott, Sargeant returns to the Bill Stokeld Stadium, a box to box midfielder assured to ignite the Millers engine in the centre of the park.

Joining him, experienced goalkeeper Kieran Preston signs on loan from Basford United, Preston who joins on a season long deal will add pressure to first-choice Jack Steggles who has been solid-choice as Carlton no1 for a number of years.

Carlton have had mixed results in pre-season with a 2-1 defeat last time out against Frickley Athletic at Stoke Lane. The Millers prior to that beat Shildon 1-0 and were held in a dramatic 4-4 thriller by Heanor Town (which lead to another new signing as Louis Czerwak scored a hat-trick on trial) but beat Welsh outfit Merthry Town 3-0 following a thumping 4-0 loss at Staveley.

Saturday’s game see’s the return of Shepshed Dynamo to the Northern Premier League, it will be Carlton’s 14th consecutive season at the level. Impressive for a side that has punched above it’s weight for a number of seasons since formation in 2002 (following on from the previous club name of Sneinton FC).

The match at the Dovecote Stadium just over the Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire border will be one of Carlton Town’s shortest trips this season, other local league matches include the tie against Loughborough Dynamo on Sat 16th October at home and at Nanpantan Sports Ground in the new year and a crossing into Derbyshire for the match up with Ilkeston in late Feb after hosting the same opponents in September. Carlton will also travel to Derbyshire neighbours Belper Town later this month (24th August) after their first Emirates FA Cup tie of the season against either Barton Town or Maltby Main.
