Mansfield Town 3-1 Swindon Town (EFL League Two) 11.01.22
After Saturday’s proud cup exploits against Middlesbrough it was back to league action for the first time this year for Mansfield who saw off Swindon Town by the odd goal in five.
The Stags got off to a flying start after just five minutes when Rhys Oates broke forward to cross to George Maris who put the home side ahead. Swindon tested Bishop on twenty minutes from a free kick but the Manchester United loanee tipped over the bar before the visitors levelled up with Harry McKirdy netting on 28.
Mansfield didn’t have long to wait until they regained the lead, two minutes after Swindon squared it was Oates who was brought down inside the box, McLaughlin coolly dispatching the penalty down to the goalkeepers left.
Things got even better for Mansfield two minutes before the break. Jordan Bowery played through to lob Ward in the Robins goal to give Nigel Clough’s men a 3-1 lead at half time.
Swindon pressed early in the second half and hit the top of the crossbar when Iandolo’s header from a corner bounced off the woodwork to safety. The dangerous McKirdy then shot on the spin but O’Toole took the sting off the attempt by bravely blocking for the ball to trickle to the hands of Bishop.
The away side continued their press and did get a goal in the final minute of normal time, Iandolo shooting powerfully hard and low after a jinking run to set up a few nervy moments but Mansfield came through.
The win takes Mansfield to eighth in the table a place outside the playoffs and with a game in hand on seventh placed Newport, the Stags level on points (35 from 23 games) with the side from South Wales and sixth placed Port Vale who themselves have played just 21 times.
Next up at the weekend is mid-table Walsall at home, Mansfield looking for a sixth straight league win against the Sadlers.
