Notts Battling Hard At Sussex On Day Two

Sussex 375 v Nottinghamshire 214/5 (County Championship Division Two) 08.04.22

*day two (of four)

Awoken to the alarm of day two on the adjacent south east coastal towns of Brighton & Hove as the gulls fly and squawk above on a cloudy and overcast morning which thankfully feels a little less breezy, than the gale force that consistently blew off our bails during the seasons opening three sessions at the 1st Central in Sussex yesterday.

Quick to work with the home side 302/6, Hutton and Fletcher at each end keeping the batting pair of Clark and Lenham on their toes. Within an hour of play though Clark is hundred up as he reaches his century from 185 deliveries, a quick single off Liam Patterson-White as he scurried to the bowlers end before screaming for delight.

The celebrations didn’t last long. Lyndon James with only his second ball of the morning seeing a gap through Clark’s resistance just two deliveries after reaching his milestone. 100 not out becoming hundred and gone.

Steve Finn was next, the England international falling at ten, lbw to LPW for wicket number four of the innings for the in-form spinner Patterson-White with Sussex 353/8.

It wasn’t long before Lenham followed suit, hooking a short ball by Luke Fletcher to Ben Slater at fine leg, he would go for 24, Fletcher remember the countries highest wicket taker last season, with his first County Championship scalp of this.

As lunch approached, the Sussex innings complete right on time, Liam Patterson-White taking his five for with another lbw decision going his way, Crocombe for a handy sixteen leaving Atkins not out on three, the home side coming in on 375 all out, setting a chompy chase for the Notts batsmen to follow.

In reply things didn’t start too well… Slater bowled Crocombe for one as Notts began their chase one for one in just their second over.

Hameed was next, first ball of the sixth caught behind by Carter off the bowling of Finn. Notts 19/2 and looking hopeless in chase.

Duckett and Clarke aimed to steady ship but Finn struck again as the latter trotted off disappointingly for six. Duckett himself scrambling to a quick fire 31 before giving up his wicket in the slips to the bowling of Atkins.

Enter the skipper, Stephen Mullaney joining Lyndon James on seven at the crease and the old and young partnership dug in to steer Notts to some relative respectability.

The pair saw through to tea with Notts 94/4 before James was first to reach his half century. He eventually went to another scalp of Finn for 63 smashing one up in the air to the wicketkeeper whilst Mullaney at the other end stood on 49.

Skipper eventually passing the half century himself, he saw the 200 up with Tom Moores at the crease. Mullaney ending 79 not out with Moores on 23 by stumps, Notts five down with 139 runs still to make up, finely in the balance, another morning session tomorrow may play pivotal as to where this one will go.
