Nottinghamshire 302 & 242 v Glamorgan 379 & 166/3 (County Championship Division Two) 14.04.22-17.04.22
*four day match Glamorgan win by seven wickets
A first match of the season at Trent Bridge for Nottinghamshire ended in first defeat of the season as Glamorgan came out the better of the two sides in a game they controlled from day two of the four onwards.
Notts first innings tally of just over 300 gave the Welsh side a reasonable chase which they dealt with superbly and in response to a 77 first innings lead for the away side, Notts struggled to set anything too difficult to run down and Glamorgan with a session to spare came through to win.
Four clear days over the Easter weekend in Rushcliffe starting with a bit of cloud on Thursday as Slater and Hameed went into bat after the visitors elected to field. The pacey Australian Neser seeing off Slater caught behind by Northeast for 17 and as Duckett and Hameed started to get in some rhythm for the second wicket, the luckiest of run outs came as bowler Weighell finger tipped a ball struck back at him by Duckett onto the stumps at the bowlers end as Hameed was unforgivably, and most unluckily outside his crease.
Clarke kept Duckett some company before being bowled by van der Gugten for 33, Evison lasted just five balls for a duck before Mullaney steadied the ship further as Duckett reached his century.
Shortly after tea on day one Notts were looking good and cantering past 250/5 but a collapse in the last session saw them lose five for 44 as the home side were bowled out. Duckett in the end going for 122, Mullaney had earlier made 44 and it was his wicket which lead to the slip.
Glamorgan closed day one on 33/0 and marched on to control day two making 354 before stumps, with one wicket remaining.
Notable scores for Lloyd (76), Northeast (85) and ninth man van der Gugton (62) helped the away side take a sizeable lead into the final innings, one plus for Notts was the wicket of Labuschagne for three as Brett Hutton bowled the Aussie LBW for just three. Notts best bowler was Joey Evison who took 3/67 as Glamorgan wrapped up their innings on day three and got to work on the Notts batsmen.
In response, it was a horrible start for Nottinghamshire as they went from 0/1 to 1/2 in losing both their openers without score.
Ben Duckett again provided some hope, but when Clarke went for 30 with the score 63/3 Notts were still behind in the match with three of their top four gone.
Mullaney went for just eight and after Moores provided some hope, van der Gugton ripped into the middle order taking first Duckett for 95 before Patterson-White followed for 8 and Moores on 30, Pattison on 3 left just two to go as Notts ended day three on 224/8 just 147 in the lead.
Despite some resilience from the the tail end (Evison sticking around for 92 balls scoring 37 whilst Hutton scored 17 from 56), that lead on day four stretched only to 165 after both went with Pattinson left two not out.
Glamorgan in response still had the best part of three sessions to win the match and raced to 42 before losing their first wicket Salter to the bowling of Patterson-White and Lloyd quickly followed on 23 before Labuschagne and Northeast shown some composure to take the chase under 100.
Northeast himself smashing up to Paterson on the boundary from the bowling of Pattinson before the world’s number one test batsman Labuschagne and Kiran Carlson stroked their way to safety, Labuschagne finishing on fifty not out whilst Carlson on 47 finished on a six, his runs from just 48 balls.
Despite loss, Notts did take six batting/bowling points, and do sit third in the table behind Glamorgan who are now top five points in front of the team from Trent Bridge, whilst Durham in second are a point above Notts, Durham host the green and golds at Chester Le Street on Thursday.
