Non League Weekend Preview

Basford United travel to the Leicestershire village of Barwell tomorrow as they look for three points in search of climbing up the Southern League Central Division table to the playoff zone.

The Ambers are currently eight points off the top five but won last time out, beating Alvechurch 3-0 before their midweek fixture with high flying Nuneaton Borough was called off due to a frozen pitch in Warwickshire.

United are currently twelfth in the table having played 24 games but still have a slim chance of catching Coalville in fifth spot despite the Ravens having three games in hand.

Barwell their opponents and hosts on Saturday, are hovering just above the relegation zone in seventeenth.

A division below step three of the non-league pyramid, the next highest flyers from Notts are Worksop Town who head the Northern Premier League East Division by a whopping fourteen points.

The Tigers were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Bridlington on Saturday to end a run of 19 winning matches in a row, but Craig Parry’s men were more relieved than frustrated after a last-minute Josh Wilde goal rescued a point against the Seasiders. Next up, on Saturday Worksop welcome Long Eaton United who are currently eleventh in the division.

At the wrong end of the table in the NPL East are Carlton Town, struggling in seventeenth and worryingly close to the drop zone.

The Millers lost 2-0 at Stocksbridge last time out and travel to fellow strugglers Grantham Town on Saturday. The Gingerbreads a place and a point below Carlton in eighteenth, with all to play for at the Meres Stadium.

In the United Counties League Premier Division North, Newark & Sherwood United are eyeing promotion to step four, sitting seventh in the table with a cluster of clubs split by a couple of points.

One of those sides is Kimberley MW who in tenth, are just a point behind Newark and the two teams should have met midweek in a Nottinghamshire derby but for the freezing conditions putting pay to what would have been a hotly contested match.

Instead, Newark travel to Heanor Town on the Derbyshire border to take on opponents a point and a place below them in the table, whilst Kimberley travel to Boston Town who are likewise, one point and one place below their opponents for the day.

Another Notts based club going well is Sherwood Colliery who entertain Heather St John’s at Debdale Park tomorrow. Sherwood are ninth in the table and will be backing themselves to pick up three points against a side from Leicestershire who are second bottom.

Three more games in the UCL Premier Division North tomorrow all effect the relegation zone as bottom of the table Selston take on second top Melton Town at the Parish Hall. Selston lost last time out to unbeaten runaway leaders Loughborough Students 2-0, so will have confidence going into their match against another strong Leics based opponent that they can at least compete.

Whilst third bottom AFC Mansfield travel to Anstey Nomads who had that marvellous FA Cup run earlier in the season, fourth bottom Eastwood FC are at Leicester Nirvana who are fifteenth in the table.
