Nottingham RFU’s Jack Spittle has been awarded the Greene King IPA Championship try of the season after his magnificent solo effort running the length of the pitch against Yorkshire Carnegie in January.
Spittle’s try can be watched with all the game highlights below (fast forward to 3:20 for the campaigns winning try) and came during Nottingham’s 62-10 victory at Headingley in the league earlier this year.
Bottom of the table Yorkshire suffered three huge league and cup losses against the Green and Whites with the opening game of the season at Lady Bay ending 83-0 to Nottingham in the group stages of the Championship Cup before a return match in December finished 50-0 to the away side. In the League Nottingham were due to host Yorkshire on May 1st and ended up easy winners in the away tie at Leeds with Jack Spittle going on to score five tries in the match.
The best of the bunch however saw the winger pick the ball up on his goal-line and run the length of the pitch to the other end to the delight of his team-mates, staff and travelling support.
Trent University graduate Spittle who became only the twelfth man to score a five try haul in the 143 year history of Nottingham Rugby Club ended the season scoring ten tries in 14 matches and has an impressive record of 18 tries in 36 games for the club since joining in 2016.
Spittle beat Ryan Hunter of Bedford, Jack Stapley of Jersey Reds and Cornish Pirates Nicolas De Battista to take the award.
In other league news the Championship has promoted Newcastle Falcons (played 15 won 15) to the Premiership as convincing table toppers before the table was adjourned with Yorkshire Carnegie who were bottom having lost all of their fourteen games relegated from the division. Replacements will be made for the 2020/21 season in due course.
Nottingham were sixth in the table before the campaigns premature end and after the governing bodies averaged results for the remaining fixtures the Green and Whites kept their sixth place under the leagues calculations for finishing the season.
