In this Magpie Circle exclusive podcast, Fabian Spiess tells his own story of intense highs and the lowest of lows during his goalkeeping career at Notts County.
Spiess made his first team debut in League One at the tender age of 18 in a 4-1 win over Colchester nine years ago.
He was linked with a move to Manchester United and also had a trial with Liverpool.
Spiess talks about the mental health challenges he faced while at Notts and upon his release.
And he admits to having ‘suicidal thoughts’ when reporting for training.
Spiess said: “My story is one of thousands that are often unheard.
“It’s not about me, but helping others understand that it’s okay to struggle.
“It’s okay to ask for help. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you to the Magpie Circle podcast for allowing me to share.”
Spiess made a total of 13 appearances before he was released by Ricardo Moniz in 2015.
It’s a compelling tale of what really goes on behind the scenes in a professional football club.
