Mansfield Town 3-2 Manchester City U21 (EFL Trophy Group F) 30.08.22
Mansfield Town came from behind to win an entertaining Papa Johns Trophy match at the One Call Stadium against Premier League youngsters Manchester City.
After a couple of early scares when a Citizens attempt was cleared off the line and another put into the net, ruled out for offside, the Stags took the lead on sixteen minutes when Lucas Akins headed home a George Maris corner but the visitors were back on level terms a minute before the half hour, 18-year-old Portuguese star Carlos Borges capitalising on an error from Stags goalkeeper Scott Flinders as he raced on to a long pass played by his own goalkeeper to round the Mansfield stopper rooted well outside his area before placing into an empty net.
Three minutes later, City took the lead with another long goalkeeper pass, Dutch ball sprayer Mikki van Sas, this time finding Borges down the right who supplied Will Dickson with a teasing cross, the 17-year-old striker then tapped home from close range for away delight on 32.
Mansfield came out strong in the second half and were back on level terms with a belter by James Gale. Lucas Akins proving a thorn in the box, often too strong for the youthful opponents to handle, as he headed down a cross into Gale’s path, the young forward volleying hard into the top corner from all of seven yards.
Wallace then blazed over on the hour when he should have found the target before Jordan Bowery had a shot blocked by a defender with ten minutes left, but as the home side pressed, they finally got their goal on 84, a neat interchange ended with Hewitt crossing in low to substitute George Lapslie who slid home for the winner.
Mansfield now level with Derby in the group who beat Grimsby 3-1 on three points, the Stags next EFL Trophy match is at Blundell Park on the 20th September. Before then, Nigel Clough’s side are back in league action this Saturday at Doncaster Rovers.
