Retford & Radford Through
Two of the quarter-final match-ups for this season’s Nottinghamshire FA Senior Cup competition were played on Tuesday night as Retford United came from behind to progress late on, whilst Radford also made the final four courtesy of a shoot-out success.
Perhaps a game of two halves, it would be the United Counties Premier North side who’d take the lead early in the first, and that coming after they’d hit the post, through Kieran Cummings, after a couple of minutes.
The opener, that arrived inside fifteen minutes after The Highwaymen were awarded a free-kick, Jamie Williamson getting on the end of to finish well past Jonathan Hedge; it was a lead that was nearly doubled on the half hour, but the angle was too tight for Cummings after he’d capitalised on a wayward back-pass.
Retford was aggrieved late in the first half when a penalty appeal, following a foul on Williamson, was away be the referee, it coming shortly after Beau Watson, in The Highwaymen’s goal, had saved from Brandon Kane.
Both sides saw action early in the second period, Cummings forcing a save from Hedge just after the hour, before the Badgers have a flurry of efforts on Watson’s goal; Ross Goodwin and Mark West getting in on the action, with Igor Mlynarski starting to impose a threat on the flank.
The equaliser arrived as the game ticked towards the final ten minutes, a goalmouth scramble leading to Liam Owen poking home, and, minutes later, the Badgers led, this time a penalty was given following a handball, and Kieran Knight stepped up to fire what proved the winner, past Watson.

Retford United will face fellow UCL Division One side, Radford, in the semi-finals, after the Pheasants doused the Cobras of Clipstone, in the quarter-final clash.
Theirs was a game that would finish goalless after ninety minutes, the hosts taking the win with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out success.
The other semi-final will be contested between Hucknall Town, and the winner of the ties between Basford United and Nottingham Forest U21s, which is scheduled to be played on Tuesday 11 February.
A couple of league games were also played, with one in the UCL Division One, and one in the Notts Senior League Premier Division.
In the former of those, there was plenty of action in a battle of two of the bottom three, between Rainworth Miners Welfare (17th), and Selston (18th), the visitors finding themselves down to nine men after 35 minutes, following the dismissals of Lewis Fantom (22 mins) and Jordan Black (35 mins).
However, the hosts failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage, the games’ three goals coming in quick succession early in the second half.
Jack Cockram put Selston in front straight off the restart and, although Blake Freeman equalised, Arthur Pashley went straight up the other end to restore the visitors’ advantage, and claim victory.
Meanwhile, in the NSL Premier, the game between hosts, fourth place Borrowash Victoria, and visiting FC Sez, who are third bottom, finished in a 3-3 draw, the Notts club netting through Nicholas Federici, Orlando Robinson, and Kaylum Taylor.
