Sturton Aims To Get Back To Winning Ways
At 22-years-old, Hucknall lightweight boxer, Harvey Sturton, 3-1(1), has the world at his feet.
Despite defeat in his last outing, Sturton, who debuted in late 2024 under the Scott Calow Promotions banner, knows that the experience gained from that is extremely valuable to what is to come moving forward.
Chelmsley Wood’s former Midlands Area lightweight title holder, Scott Melvin, 12-1(2) took Sturton the full six rounds before winning on points, but for the Hucknall fighter, it was a learning curve he’s not only taken on board, but is already utilising in his psyche and arsenal moving forward.
“It wasn’t that much of a big deal for me,” explained Sturton, thinking back to that November 2025 outing.
“He’s got a lot more experience than me and I knew that, come the last two rounds, I was on the back foot.
“I did well though, and learnt from it; I’m happy that I can go that distance.”
Although his next outing, this Saturday night against Karl Sampson, 10-67-1(1), at the Newark Showground, will be over four rounds, Sturton is as grounded and forthcoming as anyone when looking ahead.
With dreams of lifting an Area title, even English and British, in the not-too-distant future for him, Sturton, who not only works at University of Nottingham as an apprentice electrician, is also studying for an HNC (Higher National Certificate) there – he’s kind of burning that candle at both ends.
“I do get caught up with it all come the end of the week,” smiled Sturton.
“The hope is not to get burnt out but everything is going well, between work, education, gym and training.
“If I can get three fights a year, then that’s doable for me, so we’ll see what happens after this one.
“But there’s always something that needs doing, and I like keeping busy.”
Although Melvin was the last holder of the Midlands lightweight strap, following a TKO10 over Mykey Lee Broughton in September 2023, the title itself is one of a long lineage, dating back over a century.
It was first contested back in 1924, at Birmingham’s Bingley Hall, with Nottingham’s Frank Parkes an early holder, contesting it seven times between 1949 and 1956; moving to the present day however, and 2026, there’s a scenario where Sturton, and stablemate Spencer Binks, will by vying for that.
“I want to go for the Area title whilst I’m still eager, and still young,” continued Sturton.
“Any chances I get (at lightweight) I’ll take, and I know that winning that opens doors for the English and British titles.
“Scott is a former title holder and was meant to win, so I got a lot more from that fight.
“It means that, going into this, against Sampson, I’ll go in and try to outbox him, not get carried away, and get some more rounds under the belt.”
Sturton does have one stoppage success on his fight ledger, a TKO3 over Liam Fitzmaurice, in his second outing, either side of successes against Jordan Harding and Owen Durnan; the focus now though, is on Sampson.
And with a new sponsor on-board, it’s made the process all that easier, Sturton finishing up by thanking Wood Lane Timber Merchants Ltd, saying; “It’s nice to have the support of a local company, supporting local talent.
“I’m proud to have a local Hucknall company backing me all the way.”
Hucknall lightweight, Harvery Sturton, takes to the ring for his fifth professional fight, against Karl Sampson, at the Newark Showground, this coming Saturday (21 March) night, on the Carl Greaves Promotions in association with Dean Sugden event, headlined by the Midlands Area cruiserweight title rematch between Craig Nelson (champion) and Tom Pogson (challenger).
